We have previously discussed NFPA 13 and NFPA 2001 in <strong>Ganjineh Pavan<\/strong>&#8216;s articles. In this article, from <a href=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/category\/articles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ganjineh Pavan&#8217;s articles<\/a>, we discuss the NFPA 72 standard, guidelines for the design and installation of fire alarm and signaling systems.<\/p><h2>History and Application of NFPA 72 Standard<\/h2><p>The history of NFPA signaling standards dates back to 1898. The 1993 edition of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code, was a consolidation of all installation standards related to fire alarm systems that had previously been published as separate documents. NFPA 72 covers the application, installation, location, operation and maintenance of fire alarm systems and their components.<\/p><p>Therefore, NFPA 72, or the National Code for Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems, is a model standard used by professionals, architects, engineers, builders, and inspectors to specify features and equipment.<\/p><p>The NFPA 72 standard is published by the National Fire Protection Association every 3 years for the installation of fire alarm and emergency communication systems in the United States.<\/p><p>NFPA 72 Standard Application, Installation, Location, Operation, Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Fire Alarm Systems, Monitoring Station Alarm Systems, Public Emergency Alarm Reporting Systems, Fire Alarm Equipment, and Emergency Communications Systems (ECS) Emergency Communications Systems and Covers their components.<\/p><p>Federal, state, and local municipalities throughout the United States have adopted NFPA 72 as a standard in implementing fire code regulations. Municipalities often adopt revisions to these regulations after years of review and modification, and make many local fire codes specific to their governing authorities.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22224\" src=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/22.jpg\" alt=\"NFPA 72 Standard Application\" width=\"660\" height=\"846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/22.jpg 660w, https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/22-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p><h2>The importance of NFPA 72 in Iran&#8217;s national building regulations<\/h2><p>The third topic of <a href=\"https:\/\/inbr.ir\/?page_id=2032\">National Building Regulations of Iran<\/a> deals with the protection of buildings against fire. Based on this topic, the design, selection of equipment, implementation, installation and any change, transformation, and development in fire detection and alarm systems in buildings should be done according to valid criteria and standards and by experienced professionals.<\/p><p>The National Building Regulations of Iran have introduced three acceptable references for the control, design, and installation of these systems, one of which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=72\">NFPA 72<\/a> standard. Therefore, familiarization with this standard is necessary for the activists in the field of fire alarm and extinguishing.<\/p><h2>The\u00a0purpose\u00a0of\u00a0NFPA\u00a072 guidelines<\/h2><p>The\u00a0purpose\u00a0of the\u00a0NFPA\u00a072 standard\u00a0is\u00a0to\u00a0specify\u00a0the\u00a0means\u00a0and\u00a0equipment\u00a0for signal reception,\u00a0transmission,\u00a0notification,\u00a0notification, performance levels, and\u00a0reliability\u00a0of\u00a0different\u00a0types of fire alarm\u00a0systems.\u00a0It also defines the\u00a0characteristics\u00a0associated\u00a0with these\u00a0systems\u00a0and provides information necessary to\u00a0modify\u00a0or upgrade an\u00a0existing\u00a0system\u00a0to meet the\u00a0requirements\u00a0of a specific\u00a0system\u00a0zoning.<\/p><p>NFPA\u00a072\u00a0specifies\u00a0minimum required levels of\u00a0performance,\u00a0redundancy, and\u00a0quality\u00a0of\u00a0installation, but does not\u00a0specify\u00a0the\u00a0only\u00a0methods for\u00a0achieving\u00a0these\u00a0requirements.\u00a0Although the\u00a0code\u00a0applies\u00a0only\u00a0to the\u00a0installation\u00a0of\u00a0new\u00a0systems\u00a0and is not\u00a0retroactive, the Testing, Maintenance, and Inspection\u00a0chapter\u00a0states, &#8220;The provisions\u00a0of this\u00a0chapter\u00a0apply\u00a0to\u00a0new\u00a0and\u00a0existing\u00a0systems.&#8221;\u00a0This\u00a0requirement\u00a0is\u00a0important\u00a0for those\u00a0contractors\u00a0who regularly maintain and test fire alarm\u00a0systems.\u00a0Another\u00a0option\u00a0is\u00a0to\u00a0allow\u00a0the competent authority to\u00a0determine\u00a0whether the\u00a0existing\u00a0situation\u00a0poses\u00a0a specific risk to\u00a0life\u00a0or\u00a0property, then\u00a0retroactive\u00a0application of the\u00a0provisions\u00a0of the Code is\u00a0permitted.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22226\" src=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/33-1.jpg\" alt=\"NFPA 72 Standard Application\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/33-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/33-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/33-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gpavan.com\/En\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/33-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p><h2>2002 and 2007 editions of NFPA 72<\/h2><p>NFPA 72 was revised in 2002. The 2002 edition reflects several technical corrections throughout the code. Some of the most important new requirements are related to the damage to fire alarm systems, additional requirements related to the review and approval of performance-based detection system designs, and revision of the system survival rules against attack by fire.<\/p><p>introducing rules for an alternative approach to audible signaling, adding requirements to address performance-based designs for visible signals, moving testing and maintenance requirements for single-station and multi-station alarms and home fire alarm systems to the testing and repair season; and maintenance and revisions to re-establish regulations for domestic fire alarm equipment are among other things in this edition.<\/p><p>In the 2007 edition of the NFPA 72 standard, the setting up of fire protection devices, fire monitoring systems, as well as notification and warning equipment and systems, emergency communication systems, and how to monitor the fire station has been reviewed. This version replaces all the previous standards.<\/p><h2>NFPA 72 Standard Requirements for the Design and Installation of Fire Alarm and Notification Systems<\/h2><p>1) Each zone has a maximum area of 2000 square meters.<\/p><p>2) The maximum length of each zone is 3000 meters.<\/p><p>3) The maximum number of elements in each zone (including fire alarms, sirens, detectors, etc.) is 24, and it is better to have a maximum of 20 elements.<\/p><p>4) Each residential floor can be placed in one zone.<\/p><p>5) It is suggested that each escape staircase should be included in a zone and a fire alarm should be installed on the escape route.<\/p><p>6) In places where there is induced voltage (transformer room, switch, etc.), it should be used with coated wire.<\/p><p>7) The wire must be in one piece and in a separate and independent tube.<\/p><p>8) False ceilings and ceilings with a height of more than 80 cm need a detector.<\/p><p>9) If the partition distance is less than 30 cm, the detector is considered separate.<\/p><p>10- If the height of the ceiling is more than 50 cm, a separate detector is considered for each space.<\/p><p>11) All warehouses must have detectors:<\/p><p>A- If the warehouse is in a residential unit, it is necessary to consider a thermal detector.<\/p><p>B &#8211; For warehouses in the parking lot if it is in a row at a distance of 50 cm from the warehouses and at most 8 meters from the warehouses.<\/p><p>12) The smoke detector should be installed near the meter board.<\/p><p>Each engine room and elevator shaft should have a separate area for smoke detectors (smoke extraction system recommended).<\/p><p>14) It is necessary to use a smoke detector or a linear thermal detector in industrial niches and buildings with riser electricity.<\/p><p>15) The maximum coverage area for the smoke detector is 100 square meters and for the heat detector is 60 square meters.<\/p><p>16) The maximum height of the detector is 12 meters standard.<\/p><h2>17)\u00a0Range\u00a0of\u00a0detectors:<\/h2><p><strong>a.\u00a0Smoke detectors:<\/strong><\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0A\u00a0circle\u00a0with a\u00a0radius\u00a0of 6.5\u00a0meters<\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0The\u00a0distance\u00a0of the smoke detector\u00a0is\u00a010.6\u00a0meters\u00a0to 15\u00a0meters\u00a0according\u00a0to the installation location.<\/p><p><strong>b)\u00a0Heat detectors:<\/strong><\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0A\u00a0circle\u00a0with a\u00a0radius\u00a0of 5.3\u00a0meters\u00a0in high-risk areas\u00a0such as\u00a0the\u00a0kitchen.<\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0A\u00a0circle\u00a0with a\u00a0radius\u00a0of 6.5\u00a0meters\u00a0in less dangerous places\u00a0such as\u00a0the parking lot.<\/p><p>&#8211;\u00a0The\u00a0distance\u00a0between two\u00a0detectors\u00a0is\u00a07.5\u00a0meters\u00a0to 10.6\u00a0meters\u00a0depending\u00a0on the\u00a0place\u00a0of\u00a0installation\u00a0and\u00a0arrangement.<\/p><p>18)\u00a0It is good to\u00a0use\u00a0two-channel\u00a0detectors\u00a0in\u00a0hotels\u00a0and residential buildings, but it is necessary to\u00a0use\u00a0a separate\u00a0detector\u00a0for industrial areas.<\/p><p>19)\u00a0The\u00a0location\u00a0of the smoke\u00a0detector\u00a0should not be in or near the air flow\u00a0(away from the\u00a0window\u00a0and\u00a0door\u00a0and parking area).<\/p><p>20)\u00a0The minimum\u00a0distance\u00a0between the\u00a0detector\u00a0and the\u00a0wall\u00a0or\u00a0partition\u00a0is\u00a050 cm, and the maximum\u00a0distance\u00a0is\u00a07\u00a0meters\u00a0for\u00a0smoke\u00a0and 5.5\u00a0meters\u00a0for\u00a0heat.<\/p><p>21)\u00a0The\u00a0best\u00a0place to\u00a0install\u00a0the fire alarm panel\u00a0is\u00a0in the\u00a0security, janitor and information room or near the\u00a0entrance\u00a0of the\u00a0building.\u00a0In such a way that it can be seen by the general public and especially by firefighters.<\/p><p>22)\u00a0In the shed space, the maximum distance that a\u00a0person\u00a0travels\u00a0to\u00a0reach\u00a0the\u00a0fire alarm\u00a0should not\u00a0exceed\u00a020\u00a0meters.<\/p><p>23)\u00a0In sloping\u00a0roofs,\u00a0detectors\u00a0should be\u00a0installed\u00a0at a\u00a0height\u00a0of 50\u00a0cm\u00a0lower than the highest point of the\u00a0roof.<\/p><p>24)\u00a0Fire extinguishers\u00a0are normally\u00a0installed\u00a0at a\u00a0height\u00a0of 120 to 140\u00a0cm\u00a0and\u00a0fire\u00a0warning signs are\u00a0installed\u00a0at a\u00a0height\u00a0of 170\u00a0cm\u00a0from the\u00a0floor.<\/p><p>25)\u00a0It is\u00a0mandatory\u00a0to\u00a0use\u00a0an addressable\u00a0fire\u00a0alarm system for residential complexes and large industrial sheds.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21483\" src=\"https:\/\/gpavan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/44-1.jpg\" alt=\"fire alarm\" width=\"1183\" height=\"857\" \/><\/p><p>According to the NFPA 72 standard, each floor of a residential building can be placed in one zone.<\/p><h2>26)\u00a0in addressable systems<\/h2><p>&#8211;\u00a0The\u00a0maximum\u00a0length of the\u00a0loop\u00a0is\u00a03\u00a0km\u00a0and\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0maximum\u00a0of 128\u00a0elements.<\/p><p>27)\u00a0Round-trip systems cannot be\u00a0used\u00a0for round-trip routing inside a\u00a0pipe.<\/p><p>28)\u00a0The maximum number of loops is four.<\/p><p>29)\u00a0Maximum 24 detectors should be\u00a0installed\u00a0in each\u00a0zone.<\/p><p>30)\u00a0For the communication\u00a0cable\u00a0of the\u00a0sensors,\u00a0type\u00a0JY-ST-Y\u00a0(0.8 mm)\u00a0and 1.5 mm\u00a0cable\u00a0can be\u00a0used\u00a0for\u00a0sirens\u00a0and hand signals.<\/p><p>31)\u00a0In commercial-residential complexes, there is no\u00a0need\u00a0for a\u00a0special\u00a0connection between\u00a0fire control\u00a0systems\u00a0and only sirens should be installed outdoors.<\/p><p>32)\u00a0Each\u00a0commercial unit\u00a0has\u00a0an independent and central\u00a0fire alarm\u00a0system\u00a0and\u00a0each\u00a0passage\u00a0has\u00a0a separate\u00a0fire alarm\u00a0system.<\/p><p>33)\u00a0At the\u00a0end\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0path\u00a0of the\u00a0sirens, the\u00a0end\u00a0resistance of the\u00a0line\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0placed.<\/p><p>34)\u00a0In the\u00a0case\u00a0of\u00a0using\u00a0the exposed wiring of the\u00a0fire alarm system, a metal each\u00a0zone\u00a0should be\u00a0specified\u00a0on the\u00a0map\u00a0of the central\u00a0fire alarm\u00a0system\u00a0(F.A.C).<\/p><h2>NFPA\u00a072\u00a0standard\u00a0afterword<\/h2><p>In
